Back in May of this year, Greg Abbott, the current governor of the state of Texas, signed into law a six week abortion law that prohibitions abortions as early as six weeks. This is considered one of the strict and extreme laws regarding women’s right since the Roe v. Wade case. While I am not an abortion law attorney, I still find clients of mine reaching out for my professional opinion regarding this matter. The main thing that this law should show you is the importance of who you vote for and who is in office. All the Supreme Court Justices were appointed by past presidents, and they will be in that position until they decide to retire or have passed away. The fact that Supreme Court Justices do not face any term limits is still a shock to some people. Making sure who you vote for aligns with your beliefs and has the same vision for the country is so important.
The reason this law is being talked about so much on social media and in the news is the fact that this abortion laws only gives six weeks of time to abort said child from contraception (which means only 2 weeks after a missed menstrual cycle) and that it gives the power to the public to be able to enforce and use this law, rather than the government. A lot of legal experts are fearing that this will create a landslide of new lawsuits and cases for the courts. Even though other states have their abortion laws set to the “heartbeat rule”, this law gives little time for someone to know they are pregnant and make a decision on aborting or not. And then gives the power to enforce that law to the general public, allowing anyone to use this law and create a court case.
Even though I do not practice abortion law, I do help people who are facing unjust circumstances from the legal system in other family law matters.
